Treat Your Vintage Watch Right

Blog

If you have just gotten a vintage watch, you are probably counting yourself lucky that you have found yourself a beautiful new accessory. But before you start wearing your watch, you need to know how to take care of it properly. That watch has already lasted a long time, and you want to make sure that it continues to last a long time.

Get It Checked

The very first thing you should do is to take it to an expert and have it checked over carefully. The only exception to this is if you bought the watch from a jeweler who deals with vintage watches. Otherwise, you can't be sure what the history of your watch is, and what kind of shape it's in. There could be dirt and debris on the inside that would cause damage to the gears of your watch if it wasn't cleaned out. Getting it checked out will also make sure that all of the parts are in good working order. Don't take it to a department store to have them check it; make sure that you take it to a jeweler or watch repair specialist who handles vintage or antique watches and clocks. They will be able to handle your watch properly.

Wind It

Vintage watches don't run on batteries. They need to be wound every day to keep running. When you wind the watch, it tightens the spring inside your watch. As that spring starts to unwind, your watch will work. You should wind your watch around the same time, every day, even if you aren't planning on wearing it that day. There is a stem on the side of your watch. You need to gently pull that out. If you pull it too hard, you may pull the stem out of the watch altogether. You only want to wind the watch until you feel a gentle resistance. While you can't really overwind a watch, you can put too much pressure on all the gears and works and cause them to break.

There are a number of beautiful vintage or antique watches out there. If you have just bought one or been given one as a family heirloom, you want to make sure that you take good care of it. Among other things, that means that you also need to make sure that it stays dry and that you protect it from bumps and drops. That will keep it running well for many years to come.
